Can my computer run Shadow of the Tomb Raider?
In the conclusion of the rebooted Tomb Raider series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Lara Croft must master the unforgiving jungle of the Deadliest Place on Earth to save the world from a Maya apocalypse. The developers created a world that gave players more places to explore and new methods to discover all of the secrets. This ambition is represented by yet another steady increase in system requirements from its predecessor, Rise of the Tomb Raider. It features a totally revamped control mapping for swimming and added multiple features that give the player to individually adjust the difficulties of puzzles, gameplay, and immersion. Although the same Foundation engine was used to create Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the Eidos Montreal R&D department pushed it to its full potential.
If you just want to pass the minimum requirements for PC, you would need a GeForce GTX 660/Radeon HD 7770 (DX11) or a GeForce GTX 1050 (DX12), one of the most popular video cards on the market. The GeForce GTX 660 is only one model higher than what was needed to run Rise of the Tomb Raider. The minimum CPU needed also jumped a little - from a Core i3-2100 up to a Core i3-3220 (or the AMD equivalent). The amount of RAM required also went up a small amount, but the 2 GB increase (from 6 GB to 8 GB) should not be too much of an issue as most PCs already have at least 8 GB of RAM these days.
With system requirements like these, the game is still fairly accessible and currently over 65% of PCs that have tested on CanYouRunIT passed the minimum requirements. However, there is over a 50% drop off in pass rate when you move to the recommended requirements. Between the powerful video cards required (GeForce GTX 1060/Radeon RX 480) and the high-end CPUs needed (Core i7-4770K/Ryzen 5 1600), the pass rate falls all the way down to 11% - a solid 5% less than the 2018 release of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The obvious benefit of such intense system requirements is a beautiful looking and mechanically smooth experience and Shadow of the Tomb Raider delivers magnificently on this. Polygon even went so far as to call it “arrestingly beautiful.”
It’s important to note that if your computer falls in the middle of the minimum and recommended requirements for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, then you will most likely have to lower a number of the graphics settings. The first settings to tweak should be Shadow Quality, Depth of Field, and Texture Quality. Although the game’s story is supposed to take roughly the same amount of time to complete as Rise of the Tomb Raider, the size of the game file is a whopping 40 GB (up from 25 GB). This significant increase in size is partially attributed to the increase in vertical freedom Lara Croft has during her jungle excursion. Players can explore the depths of the waters below and scale the high edges of temple walls and cliffs.
