Will your rig handle SCUM?

How will the new survival MMO SCUM run on my PC? Croatian studio Gamepires’ new title launched to the Steam store on the 29th of August 2018. Released in beta with plans for the full version to be available within a year.

Centred around its character customisation options and dependability on the player’s choices within the character creator, SCUM promises “to evolve the multiplayer open world survival game”. Boasting a singleplayer mode and an online mode, this title offers players many different scenarios they can find themselves in across the huge 395km2 map. However, will this highly detailed level of customisation and player individuality take a toll on your PC and the way it runs?

If you are planning on making SCUM your next purchase, but are unsure whether your rig can handle it, the minimal requirements are as follows:

The operating system you will need is a 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. You’ll need to have an Intel Core i5-4430 or an AMD FX-6300 to play the game. 8 GB of System RAM for ample memory and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 2GB or AMD Radeon R7 370 to process the game’s graphics. In addition to all this, the game is 20 GB so you will need enough free disk space on your computer.

If your PC fit these specs, then congratulations! You can play SCUM care free and live out your dreams as a violent Bear Grylls.

The i5-4430 with its good quad core integer speed and good average quad core mixed speed should be enough to keep the game running smoothly. However, do note that the game is in a constant state of change and new updates will be a regular occurrence. With this in mind, the game may become more advanced than it was at release, becoming more taxing on your PC than before.

However, if you own a GPU such as the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950 then don’t fret. There are many ways to improve your frames in game through the settings. One handy way to improve your framerate is to reduce the rendering resolution below 100. This means that the game won’t render the world in as much detail around you, this in turn will free up more processing power for what you are currently doing in game. Another handy way to get those precious frames is to disable DoF. This involves navigating to:

C:\Users\YourComputerName\AppData\Local\SCUM\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor.

  • From there you can open “GameUserSettings.ini” in a notepad.
  • Look for the line "r.DepthOfFieldQuality" under [ScumSettings]. If this line isn’t there you will have to add it.
  • Finally change this to “r.DepthOfFieldQuality=0” and save the file.

These little changes should see your PC handle SCUM in its current form on minimal settings a lot easier. Granted, it won’t be as pretty as it was built to be, but it will still function.

However, if you aren’t PC scum (excuse the pun!) and do have a powerful rig at your disposal, then the recommended specs for you shall be:

An Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 processor to guarantee top performance and keep up with the game. You’ll also need to upgrade your graphics card to either an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB or an AMD Radeon RX 580 4GB to be able to experience the game’s graphics as they were meant to be.

An AMD Ryzen 5 1600 with its 6 cores running at 3.6GHz is more than enough processing power to keep up with your AMD Radeon RX 580. If your PC matches or bests these requirements, in theory, you should be running at a cool 60fps or higher with no issues on your end.

Of course, in both instances you will require a stable internet connection and a minimum of 20 GB of internal storage to download the game and its future updates.
